Today was an eye-opening day…

Today I received my renewal notice from GoDaddy for this domain. To put it another way, it has been almost a year since I first registered BrettASnyder.com.

I had high hopes for the site, not in terms of fame or fortune or anything like that, but in terms of finally taking advantage of what a great learning opportunity building and maintaining a website can be. Over the course of a year, I’ve gone through 2 different hosting companies, upwards of 15 WordPress themes, and deleted infinitely more pages from this template than currently exist. I finally got the quotes section and the framework for my resources section to the point where I was OK with it and started to feel good. Then I got the renewal notice. 11 months and that’s all I have to show for it.

It’s an eye-opening feeling when you realize you under-performed expectations, especially to yourself. I could sit here and say I didn’t have the time but I could have made the time. I could say I didn’t have the ideas but there’s 2 whiteboards and a bulletin board in my office littered with concepts. What I will say is that I put this off week in and week out and it’s finally caught up to me.

So here’s my advice to anyone in a similar situation: when you’re put in a position where you have to make a decision, make one. Don’t keep saying “I’m going to start a website” or “I’m going to exercise more” or “I’m going to apply for that dream job.” Either do it or don’t, but own your decision. I can’t tell you what the right decision is or how to make it. I can just tell you to make it. For me, I’m finally writing my first post. And I’m going to write a second.  And a third.  Where this site will go from there, thematically and otherwise, will rely entirely on me and I’m committed to owning the failures as much as the successes.
